Competitions
Let us start off by underlining that Outline is continuing its tradition of being a true multi-platform party! This means that entries for any platform are welcome, no matter how obscure or mainstream.
Competition hardware
Outline organizes and supports competitions on the following hardware:
Atari ST
- Unmodified 1040STe
Atari Falcon
Two Atari Falcon configurations are available:
- Atari Falcon 030 with FPU
- 14Mb RAM
- Atari Falcon 060 with unmodified bus
- 14Mb RAM + 256Mb RAM
PC
- Intel i7 860
- 4Gb RAM
- ATI Radeon HD 5870 graphics
- Windows 7 and Ubuntu 9.10
Other platforms
Working on an Amiga entry? Bummed that your embedded fridge controllers is not in the supported hardware list? Never fear! Outline accepts pretty much any hardware platform in the Realtime Wild competition and encourages user-organized competitions if you feel like it. Just be sure to bring the actual hardware to Outline and get in touch with us.
We organize compos for every platform that we believe may receive a decent amount of entries, based on previous experiences. Then, any compo that has zero entries will be canceled. Secondly, compos with very few entries may be merged with similar compos, provided the contributors present at the party agree with this action.
General Rules
As you will see, we do not have a boatload of rules and little limitations for every compo or platform. Here is a couple that apply for all categories in general:
- Main rule: Use common sense. It comes free with having a brain.
- If your entry runs on a different configuration than the compo machine(s), please bring your own machine or contact us to verify if we can run it on available hardware.
- If you have an entry for an unlisted platform but for some reason want it to compete in a different compo than the Wild, contact us.
- We will announce technical details, formats and platforms for each entry. Bonus cheering and applause from the audience is bound to ensue if you pull of technically impressive feats concerning formats and exotic hardware, so go nuts!
- Do not expect loads of libraries to be installed, so linux people, pay attention. Unless explicity specified, they will not be on the compo machine(s). So include all the libs/dlls/packages that do not ship with the OS. If you think you may be screwed for a compo, contact us immediately.
- We accept mail-in submissions by people who cannot attend Outline for any compo. The downside is that the people of these entries will not receive cash, beer or other prizes -just fame and glory.
- We are reasonable people™. If you have any questions or requests, simply ask and we will do our best to help out!

Misc. compos
Realtime Wild demo
- This is a REAL wild compo, not an animation compo. Entries must be realtime.
- Entries for any hardware that is not listed above go here.
- Videos, animations and flash/director-ish stuff go to the animation compo. Anything else generally goes here (including, but not limited to, GBA, refridgerators, plotters, XBOX, Amiga PPC, a performance on stage, javascript, IBM XT, Vectrex and overhead projectors).
- Please bring the hardware yourself. If you cannot, please contact us (preferably in advance) and we will see what we can manage.
note: there is only one wild compo, which allows demos and intros alike. If you plan to submit something size-limited, be sure to make it known so that people can appreciate your efforts. We expect an educated audience, your PPC 4k can beat a 64mb XBOX demo.
Game
- Your entry can run on any platform, please bring custom and/or uncommon hardware with you.
- There is no file size limit for this compo, but obvious misuse of this rule will result in boohs of both organisers and audience. We will have Sir Garbagetruck perform serious sittage on your cranium as well.
128 byte intro
- Your entry can run on any platform. If the hardware is not listed above, please bring it with you.
Animation
- The entries have to be delivered in a format that VLC can play (mention the codec used to avoid issues). Flash animations should be offered with the Flash player.
- No maximum file-size, but do not abuse this or nosfe will lift his kilt. Also keep the resolution sensible so that you dont need a Pixar renderfarm to decode it.
Music
- If we really get too many entries, we may decide to apply preselection. In that case, first the entries from people who did not buy a ticket (i.e. who are not present at the party) will be taken out, followed by the utterly boring ones.
- We recommend a max 4 minute duration and may fade your song out after 4 minutes unless the tune is really catchy (no we will!).
- File size and format will be displayed while your song is being played.
Newschool & Streaming
- We are happy to play XM, IT, MOD, S3M, MTM, XRNS, MP3 and OGG.
- XMPlay will be used for all formats except RNS, which will be played with Renoise.
- We install an out-of-the-box Renoise, iow. do not use third party VSTs or other non-standard mumbo-jumbo.
- If you must enter a different format (that makes any sense), please ask.
Oldschool Tracked Music
- Your tune must be standard ProTracker format or similar and be playable on Atari systems.
- Maximum of 8 channels allowed, Maximum size 1Mb.
- Contact us in advance if replay on Atari machines might offend you or your tune, so we can agree upon an alternative.
Executable Music
- As the compo implies the entry has to be provided as an executable file with a maximum filesize of 32KB. As for platforms look at what we already offered in the other compos.
- We accept both oldskool as newskool entries here.
- If you can provide us with a .mp3 or .ogg along with the executable please do as we are as lazy as you.
Graphics
- Supply us with a summary of the main tools you have used. These will be mentioned on the bigscreen to inform the audience.
- Provide at least 3 steps along with your final graphic to guarantee us that the graphic is indeed of your own making. Obviously do not use 3rd party content.
Pixel graphics
- Accepted resolution: 320×200 in 16 colors only.
- This is a compo that will be played on an Atari ST.
Freestyle graphics
- The entries have to be delivered in a format that Irfanview supports (preferably PNG). For your own sake, avoid the lossy formats.
- Maximum resolution will be 1920×1080, scaling might occur on the bigscreen but we will zoom around a bit.
3D/Rendered graphics
